The 43rd Regiment of Foot was a distinguished infantry regiment of the British Army, originally raised in 1741. Known as the Monmouthshire Regiment, it served in numerous 18th- and early 19th-century conflicts, including the American Revolutionary War and the Napoleonic Wars. Renamed the 43rd (Monmouthshire) Light Infantry, it became a pioneer of light infantry tactics, emphasizing speed, skirmishing, and marksmanship rather than traditional line formations. The regiment gained particular fame during the Peninsular War under the Duke of Wellington, where it fought with discipline and effectiveness against French forces. Equipped and trained for rapid movement, the 43rd helped shape modern infantry doctrine. Its legacy continued through later reorganizations, eventually becoming part of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.
