“Algar” Saxon Defending with Spear 1/30 Figure – William Britain (62136)

Features

  • Figure is approximately 2.5″ tall
  • All metal construction
  • Hand painted and ready for display

This warrior’s name means “noble spearman.” The most commonly employed weapon on the battlefield was the spear – primarily because of its simple construction. It did not require a lot of iron to create the spearhead, nor was it difficult to find the ash wood to form the shaft. The larger spears, like this one, were called Æsc (from the Saxon word for ash) and were tipped with a wide, leaf-shaped blade. Spearheads ranged from 4″ to 24″ in length depending on the type, and the pole measured anywhere from 6′ to 8′ long. These spears were formidable indeed whether used en-masse during an infantry charge, employed at close range amidst a melee, or spitting at cavalry from behind a shield wall.
