Andrew Johnson was the seventeenth president of the United States, serving from 1865 to 1869 after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Born into poverty in North Carolina in 1808, he rose through politics in Tennessee as a staunch Unionist Democrat. Johnson assumed office during Reconstruction and quickly clashed with Congress over how to reintegrate the former Confederate states. He favored lenient policies toward the South and opposed many measures designed to protect formerly enslaved people. His frequent vetoes and confrontations led the House to impeach him in 1868; he avoided removal by a single Senate vote. Johnson left office politically weakened, and historians often rank his presidency among the most troubled in American history. His legacy remains controversial and deeply debated by scholars today nationwide.
