The AV-8B Harrier II, operated by Marine Attack Squadron 231 (VMA-231), played a vital role in Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led mission to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria. As a short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) aircraft, the Harrier II provided flexible, close air support from both amphibious assault ships and forward operating bases.
