The “Battle of Berlin” marked the climactic end of World War II in Europe. As the Soviet Red Army surged past the German defensive lines on the Oder River, they advanced relentlessly toward the heart of the Third Reich. The streets of Berlin became the theater for the last, most intense confrontations of the war. Defended by Wehrmacht, Waffen-SS, “Hitlerjugend,” and “Volkssturm” soldiers, the city bore witness to a desperate struggle. Led by Marshal Zukov and Marshal Konev, the Soviet forces, with overwhelming superiority in soldiers, vehicles, and artillery, ultimately secured the surrender of Berlin on May 2, 1945. The iconic image of a Red Army soldier raising the Soviet flag atop the ruins of the Reichstag remains etched in history as a symbol of victory.
