Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, was a medieval ruler who united much of Western Europe during the early Middle Ages. In 800 AD, he was crowned Emperor by Pope Leo III, reviving the idea of a Western Roman Empire. Charlemagne promoted education, standardized administration, and supported the Christian Church. His reign sparked the Carolingian Renaissance, fostering cultural and intellectual growth. He died in 814, leaving a legacy that shaped European identity and governance for centuries.
