The Texas Brigade, also known as Hood’s Texas Brigade, was one of the most celebrated Confederate units in the Civil War. Formed in 1861, it was composed mainly of regiments from Texas: the 1st, 4th, and 5th Texas Infantry, later joined by the 18th Georgia and Hampton’s South Carolina Legion. The brigade earned a fierce reputation for bravery and effectiveness in battle, serving under generals such as John Bell Hood and later Jerome B. Robertson. They fought in many of the Eastern Theater’s major battles, including Antietam, Gettysburg, and the Wilderness. Known for their fierce charges and high casualties, the Texas Brigade was often placed at the most critical points in battle. General Robert E. Lee is said to have remarked, “The Texans always move them,” in praise of their fighting spirit. Despite heavy losses, the brigade remained a symbol of Southern valor and played a key role in many Confederate campaigns.
