Union troops in the Civil War were soldiers from the Northern states who fought to preserve the Union and later to end slavery. The Union Army consisted of volunteers, conscripts, and African American soldiers who joined after the Emancipation Proclamation. Early in the war, many Union soldiers—especially officers and elite units—wore frock coats, a formal, knee-length wool garment with a fitted waist and skirted bottom. These coats, often dark blue with brass buttons, gave a distinguished appearance but were eventually replaced in most ranks by the more practical sack coat. However, frock coats remained in use among officers throughout the war. Soldiers also wore sky-blue trousers, forage caps or kepis, and carried rifled muskets, cartridge boxes, and bayonets. Despite the challenges of disease, poor conditions, and high casualties, Union troops fought in key battles like Gettysburg and Antietam, contributing to the ultimate defeat of the Confederacy and the preservation of the United States.
