Franklin Pierce (1804-1869) was the 14th president of the United States, serving from 1853 to 1857. A Democrat from New Hampshire, he was a handsome, eloquent politician known for his charm and military service in the Mexican-American War. Pierce sought to preserve national unity but instead deepened sectional divisions over slavery. His support for the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which allowed new territories to decide the slavery issue by popular sovereignty, led to violent conflict in “Bleeding Kansas” and damaged his popularity. Pierce also pursued expansionist policies, including efforts to acquire Cuba. Personally tragic—he lost all three of his children—Pierce’s presidency is often criticized for its failure to ease tensions that eventually led to the Civil War, despite his good intentions and patriotism.
