James “Jimmy” Doolittle was an American aviation pioneer, military officer, and national hero best known for leading the Doolittle Raid during World War II. In April 1942, he commanded a daring strike in which U.S. bombers launched from an aircraft carrier to attack Japan, boosting Allied morale after Pearl Harbor. A skilled pilot and aeronautical engineer, Doolittle set numerous flying records and helped advance instrument flying before the war.
