The P-51 Mustang was a pivotal American long-range fighter during World War II, renowned for its speed, range, and agility. Major James Howard was a distinguished American fighter pilot during World War II, best known for his heroic solo defense of a bomber formation over Germany in January 1944. As the only fighter escort remaining, Howard single-handedly fought off over 30 German fighters, protecting the bombers from heavy losses. For his extraordinary bravery and skill, he was awarded the Medal of Honor—the only fighter pilot in the European Theater to receive it. Formerly a pilot with the American Volunteer Group (“Flying Tigers”) in China, Howard flew the P-51 Mustang with the 354th Fighter Group, earning respect as a fearless and skilled aviator.
