RF-101A Voodoo, 363rd TRW, Udorn, 1965 1/72 Die Cast Model – HA9305Features
The F-101 Voodoo was a supersonic jet fighter developed by McDonnell Aircraft for the United States Air Force during the Cold War. Originally designed as a long-range bomber escort, its role evolved into that of an interceptor and reconnaissance aircraft. First flown in 1954 and entering service in 1957, the F-101 was powered by two Pratt & Whitney J57 turbojet engines, enabling speeds over Mach 1.7. The aircraft featured a sleek fuselage, swept wings, and a powerful radar system, making it effective in high-speed interception roles. Variants like the RF-101 were used extensively for reconnaissance during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Vietnam War, gathering vital intelligence under dangerous conditions. Armed versions carried air-to-air missiles and nuclear weapons, reflecting its strategic deterrent role. Though retired by the late 1970s in U.S. service, the Voodoo remained in use with the Royal Canadian Air Force into the 1980s. It remains a symbol of early jet-age innovation.
