The RF-5A is a reconnaissance variant of the Northrop F-5 Freedom Fighter, a lightweight, supersonic jet designed for affordability and versatility. Developed during the Cold War, the RF-5A replaced the standard nose cannon with high-resolution cameras for tactical photo-reconnaissance missions. It retained the F-5’s twin-engine configuration, sleek design, and excellent maneuverability, making it ideal for low-level reconnaissance flights in contested areas. Widely exported, the RF-5A served in the air forces of numerous U.S. allies and proved effective in a variety of environments. Its compact size and ease of maintenance made it especially valuable to smaller nations.
