The propeller in the nose of the aircraft was driven via a long connecting shaft passing under the pilot. The main armament could thus be concentrated in the ”empty” nose. Another unusual element was the use of a nose landing gear. These elements (although on the other hand they meant a certain loss in the weight of the empty aircraft) attracted potential buyers – military air forces, especially when the Bell company (a newcomer among aircraft manufacturers, but very aggressive and predatory) promised very interesting performances in advertising materials – the maximum speed of serial aircraft was supposed to be around 400 mph (miles per hour), i.e. around 644 km/h.
