It was no match for the single-engine Messerschmitt Bf 109 and Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighters, but for its size it was also very easy to fly and effective – at least with capable pilots. This was especially true in the Southwest Pacific, where the most successful American pilots, Major Richard I. Bong and Major Thomas B. McGuire.
