Thomas Paine was an influential political writer and philosopher whose ideas helped inspire the American Revolution. Born in England in 1737, he immigrated to the American colonies in 1774 and quickly became a powerful voice for independence. His pamphlet Common Sense, published in 1776, argued in clear, persuasive language that British rule was unjust and that republican self-government was both necessary and achievable. Paine later wrote The American Crisis, a series of essays that boosted morale among Revolutionary soldiers during difficult moments of the war. Beyond America, he supported the French Revolution and promoted democratic ideals, religious freedom, and human rights. Though controversial in his lifetime, Paine’s writings left a lasting impact on revolutionary thought and modern democracy.
