The Zulus in the Zulu Wars were a highly organized and disciplined African kingdom known for their military innovation and resilience. Under leaders like King Cetshwayo, they fielded regiments called amabutho, trained from a young age in endurance, coordination, and close combat. Their primary weapon was the short stabbing spear, the iklwa, paired with large cowhide shields for defense. They used strategic formations such as the “horns of the buffalo,” designed to encircle and overwhelm enemies. Despite facing a technologically superior British army with rifles and artillery, the Zulus achieved notable victories, including the Battle of Isandlwana in 1879. Their resistance demonstrated tactical skill, unity, and courage, though ultimately they were defeated and their kingdom dismantled.
