Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901) was the 23rd president of the United States, serving from 1889 to 1893. A Republican from Indiana and the grandson of President William Henry Harrison, he was known for his firm leadership and support of economic modernization. During his presidency, Harrison signed the Sherman Antitrust Act, the first federal law aimed at curbing monopolies, and backed high protective tariffs through the McKinley Tariff. He also advanced veterans’ pensions and promoted civil rights, though progress in that area was limited. His administration expanded the U.S. Navy and admitted six new states to the Union. Despite a strong legislative record, economic concerns and rising federal spending led to his defeat by Grover Cleveland in the 1892 election.
