James Monroe (1758-1831) was the 5th president of the United States, serving from 1817 to 1825. A Founding Father and member of the Democratic-Republican Party, Monroe is best known for the Monroe Doctrine, which declared that the Western Hemisphere was closed to further European colonization—an enduring cornerstone of U.S. foreign policy.
