F4U-1A Corsair 1/72 Die Cast Model – Ira Kepford, V-17 “Jolly Rogers,” U.S. Navy, Bougainville, 1944Features
The F4U Corsair was an American fighter aircraft of World War II, famous for its distinctive inverted gull wings and powerful performance. Designed by Vought, it was built around the massive Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, making it one of the fastest propeller-driven fighters of its era. The Corsair excelled in air combat, ground attack, and close air support, especially in the Pacific Theater. Armed with six .50-caliber machine guns or cannons, it was highly effective against both aircraft and ground targets. Though initially challenging to land on carriers, improvements made it a successful naval fighter. Nicknamed “Whistling Death” by Japanese forces, the Corsair earned a formidable combat record and continued service into the Korean War.
Ira Kepford was a United States Marine Corps fighter ace during World War II and one of the top pilots to fly the F4U Corsair. Serving in the Pacific Theater, he was credited with 16 aerial victories, most achieved during the intense air battles over the Solomon Islands. Kepford was known for his aggressive tactics, leadership, and skill in combat. He was killed in action in 1943, becoming a symbol of Marine Corps aviation heroism.
